Nick and Fred were paid a total of $4020 for a job they did. Fred was paid $1460 less than Nick.

1. How much was Fred paid for the job?
2. Nick and Fred were paid based on the number of days they worked. Nick worked 2 times as many days as Fred. Nick was paid $10 more than Fred per day. How many days did Nick work?

Amount that Fred was paid = 1 u
Amount that Nick was paid = 1 u + 1460

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1460
= 2 u + 1460

2 u + 1460 = 4020
2 u = 4020 - 1460
2 u = 2560

1 u = 2560 ÷ 2 = 1280

Amount that Fred was paid
= 1 u
= $1280

(b)
Amount that Nick was paid
= 1 u + 1460
= 1280 + 1460
= $2740

Nick worked 2 times as many days as Fred.

2 sets of Nick's salary = $2740

1 set of Nick's salary
= 2740 ÷ 2
= $1370

1 set of Fred's salary = $1280

Difference between each set of Nick's and Fred's salaries
= 1370 - 1280
= $90

Number of days in 1 set
= 90 ÷ 10
= 9

Number of days that Nick worked
= 2 x 9
= 18
