Ben and Riordan were paid a total of $2410 for a job they did. Ben was paid $1510 more than Riordan.

1. How much was Riordan paid for the job?
2. Ben and Riordan were paid based on the number of days they worked. Ben worked 4 times as many days as Riordan. Riordan was paid $8 less than Ben per day. How many days did Ben work?

Amount that Riordan was paid = 1 u
Amount that Ben was paid = 1 u + 1510

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1510
= 2 u + 1510

2 u + 1510 = 2410
2 u = 2410 - 1510
2 u = 900

1 u = 900 ÷ 2 = 450

Amount that Riordan was paid
= 1 u
= $450

(b)
Amount that Ben was paid
= 1 u + 1510
= 450 + 1510
= $1960

Ben worked 4 times as many days as Riordan.

4 sets of Ben's salary = $1960

1 set of Ben's salary
= 1960 ÷ 4
= $490

1 set of Riordan's salary = $450

Difference between each set of Ben's and Riordan's salaries
= 490 - 450
= $40

Number of days in 1 set
= 40 ÷ 8
= 5

Number of days that Ben worked
= 4 x 5
= 20
