Ryan and Cole were paid a total of $1720 for a job they did. Cole was paid $1240 less than Ryan.

1. How much was Cole paid for the job?
2. Ryan and Cole were paid based on the number of days they worked. Ryan worked 2 times as many days as Cole. Ryan was paid $25 more than Cole per day. How many days did Ryan work?

Amount that Cole was paid = 1 u
Amount that Ryan was paid = 1 u + 1240

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1240
= 2 u + 1240

2 u + 1240 = 1720
2 u = 1720 - 1240
2 u = 480

1 u = 480 ÷ 2 = 240

Amount that Cole was paid
= 1 u
= $240

(b)
Amount that Ryan was paid
= 1 u + 1240
= 240 + 1240
= $1480

Ryan worked 2 times as many days as Cole.

2 sets of Ryan's salary = $1480

1 set of Ryan's salary
= 1480 ÷ 2
= $740

1 set of Cole's salary = $240

Difference between each set of Ryan's and Cole's salaries
= 740 - 240
= $500

Number of days in 1 set
= 500 ÷ 25
= 20

Number of days that Ryan worked
= 2 x 20
= 40
