Valen and Tim were paid a total of $2900 for a job they did. Tim was paid $1720 less than Valen.

1. How much was Tim paid for the job?
2. Valen and Tim were paid based on the number of days they worked. Valen worked 3 times as many days as Tim. Valen was paid $10 more than Tim per day. How many days did Valen work?

Amount that Tim was paid = 1 u
Amount that Valen was paid = 1 u + 1720

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1720
= 2 u + 1720

2 u + 1720 = 2900
2 u = 2900 - 1720
2 u = 1180

1 u = 1180 ÷ 2 = 590

Amount that Tim was paid
= 1 u
= $590

(b)
Amount that Valen was paid
= 1 u + 1720
= 590 + 1720
= $2310

Valen worked 3 times as many days as Tim.

3 sets of Valen's salary = $2310

1 set of Valen's salary
= 2310 ÷ 3
= $770

1 set of Tim's salary = $590

Difference between each set of Valen's and Tim's salaries
= 770 - 590
= $180

Number of days in 1 set
= 180 ÷ 10
= 18

Number of days that Valen worked
= 3 x 18
= 54
