Simon and Jeremy were paid a total of $1620 for a job they did. Simon was paid $1480 more than Jeremy.

1. How much was Jeremy paid for the job?
2. Simon and Jeremy were paid based on the number of days they worked. Simon worked 5 times as many days as Jeremy. Jeremy was paid $20 less than Simon per day. How many days did Simon work?

Amount that Jeremy was paid = 1 u
Amount that Simon was paid = 1 u + 1480

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1480
= 2 u + 1480

2 u + 1480 = 1620
2 u = 1620 - 1480
2 u = 140

1 u = 140 ÷ 2 = 70

Amount that Jeremy was paid
= 1 u
= $70

(b)
Amount that Simon was paid
= 1 u + 1480
= 70 + 1480
= $1550

Simon worked 5 times as many days as Jeremy.

5 sets of Simon's salary = $1550

1 set of Simon's salary
= 1550 ÷ 5
= $310

1 set of Jeremy's salary = $70

Difference between each set of Simon's and Jeremy's salaries
= 310 - 70
= $240

Number of days in 1 set
= 240 ÷ 20
= 12

Number of days that Simon worked
= 5 x 12
= 60
