Oscar and Julian were paid a total of $2840 for a job they did. Julian was paid $1510 less than Oscar.

2. Oscar and Julian were paid based on the number of days they worked. Oscar worked 3 times as many days as Julian. Oscar was paid $5 more than Julian per day. How many days did Oscar work?

Amount that Julian was paid = 1 u
Amount that Oscar was paid = 1 u + 1510

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1510
= 2 u + 1510

2 u + 1510 = 2840
2 u = 2840 - 1510
2 u = 1330

1 u = 1330 ÷ 2 = 665

Amount that Julian was paid
= 1 u
= $665

(b)
Amount that Oscar was paid
= 1 u + 1510
= 665 + 1510
= $2175

Oscar worked 3 times as many days as Julian.

3 sets of Oscar's salary = $2175

1 set of Oscar's salary
= 2175 ÷ 3
= $725

1 set of Julian's salary = $665

Difference between each set of Oscar's and Julian's salaries
= 725 - 665
= $60

Number of days in 1 set
= 60 ÷ 5
= 12

Number of days that Oscar worked
= 3 x 12
= 36
