Pierre and Ian were paid a total of $2740 for a job they did. Ian was paid $1020 less than Pierre.

1. How much was Ian paid for the job?
2. Pierre and Ian were paid based on the number of days they worked. Pierre worked 2 times as many days as Ian. Pierre was paid $8 more than Ian per day. How many days did Pierre work?

Amount that Ian was paid = 1 u
Amount that Pierre was paid = 1 u + 1020

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1020
= 2 u + 1020

2 u + 1020 = 2740
2 u = 2740 - 1020
2 u = 1720

1 u = 1720 ÷ 2 = 860

Amount that Ian was paid
= 1 u
= $860

(b)
Amount that Pierre was paid
= 1 u + 1020
= 860 + 1020
= $1880

Pierre worked 2 times as many days as Ian.

2 sets of Pierre's salary = $1880

1 set of Pierre's salary
= 1880 ÷ 2
= $940

1 set of Ian's salary = $860

Difference between each set of Pierre's and Ian's salaries
= 940 - 860
= $80

Number of days in 1 set
= 80 ÷ 8
= 10

Number of days that Pierre worked
= 2 x 10
= 20
