Jack and Justin were paid a total of $1760 for a job they did. Jack was paid $1000 more than Justin.

1. How much was Justin paid for the job?
2. Jack and Justin were paid based on the number of days they worked. Jack worked 3 times as many days as Justin. Justin was paid $5 less than Jack per day. How many days did Jack work?

Amount that Justin was paid = 1 u
Amount that Jack was paid = 1 u + 1000

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1000
= 2 u + 1000

2 u + 1000 = 1760
2 u = 1760 - 1000
2 u = 760

1 u = 760 ÷ 2 = 380

Amount that Justin was paid
= 1 u
= $380

(b)
Amount that Jack was paid
= 1 u + 1000
= 380 + 1000
= $1380

Jack worked 3 times as many days as Justin.

3 sets of Jack's salary = $1380

1 set of Jack's salary
= 1380 ÷ 3
= $460

1 set of Justin's salary = $380

Difference between each set of Jack's and Justin's salaries
= 460 - 380
= $80

Number of days in 1 set
= 80 ÷ 5
= 16

Number of days that Jack worked
= 3 x 16
= 48
