Billy and Howard were paid a total of $3960 for a job they did. Howard was paid $1480 less than Billy.

2. Billy and Howard were paid based on the number of days they worked. Billy worked 2 times as many days as Howard. Billy was paid $10 more than Howard per day. How many days did Billy work?

Amount that Howard was paid = 1 u
Amount that Billy was paid = 1 u + 1480

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1480
= 2 u + 1480

2 u + 1480 = 3960
2 u = 3960 - 1480
2 u = 2480

1 u = 2480 ÷ 2 = 1240

Amount that Howard was paid
= 1 u
= $1240

(b)
Amount that Billy was paid
= 1 u + 1480
= 1240 + 1480
= $2720

Billy worked 2 times as many days as Howard.

2 sets of Billy's salary = $2720

1 set of Billy's salary
= 2720 ÷ 2
= $1360

1 set of Howard's salary = $1240

Difference between each set of Billy's and Howard's salaries
= 1360 - 1240
= $120

Number of days in 1 set
= 120 ÷ 10
= 12

Number of days that Billy worked
= 2 x 12
= 24
