Howard and Cole were paid a total of $3840 for a job they did. Cole was paid $1520 less than Howard.

1. How much was Cole paid for the job?
2. Howard and Cole were paid based on the number of days they worked. Howard worked 2 times as many days as Cole. Howard was paid $15 more than Cole per day. How many days did Howard work?

Amount that Cole was paid = 1 u
Amount that Howard was paid = 1 u + 1520

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1520
= 2 u + 1520

2 u + 1520 = 3840
2 u = 3840 - 1520
2 u = 2320

1 u = 2320 ÷ 2 = 1160

Amount that Cole was paid
= 1 u
= $1160

(b)
Amount that Howard was paid
= 1 u + 1520
= 1160 + 1520
= $2680

Howard worked 2 times as many days as Cole.

2 sets of Howard's salary = $2680

1 set of Howard's salary
= 2680 ÷ 2
= $1340

1 set of Cole's salary = $1160

Difference between each set of Howard's and Cole's salaries
= 1340 - 1160
= $180

Number of days in 1 set
= 180 ÷ 15
= 12

Number of days that Howard worked
= 2 x 12
= 24
