Ben and Pierre were paid a total of $2220 for a job they did. Pierre was paid $1680 less than Ben.

1. How much was Pierre paid for the job?
2. Ben and Pierre were paid based on the number of days they worked. Ben worked 5 times as many days as Pierre. Ben was paid $12 more than Pierre per day. How many days did Ben work?

Amount that Pierre was paid = 1 u
Amount that Ben was paid = 1 u + 1680

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1680
= 2 u + 1680

2 u + 1680 = 2220
2 u = 2220 - 1680
2 u = 540

1 u = 540 ÷ 2 = 270

Amount that Pierre was paid
= 1 u
= $270

(b)
Amount that Ben was paid
= 1 u + 1680
= 270 + 1680
= $1950

Ben worked 5 times as many days as Pierre.

5 sets of Ben's salary = $1950

1 set of Ben's salary
= 1950 ÷ 5
= $390

1 set of Pierre's salary = $270

Difference between each set of Ben's and Pierre's salaries
= 390 - 270
= $120

Number of days in 1 set
= 120 ÷ 12
= 10

Number of days that Ben worked
= 5 x 10
= 50
