Owen and Ben were paid a total of $2720 for a job they did. Owen was paid $1840 more than Ben.

1. How much was Ben paid for the job?
2. Owen and Ben were paid based on the number of days they worked. Owen worked 3 times as many days as Ben. Ben was paid $20 less than Owen per day. How many days did Owen work?

Amount that Ben was paid = 1 u
Amount that Owen was paid = 1 u + 1840

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1840
= 2 u + 1840

2 u + 1840 = 2720
2 u = 2720 - 1840
2 u = 880

1 u = 880 ÷ 2 = 440

Amount that Ben was paid
= 1 u
= $440

(b)
Amount that Owen was paid
= 1 u + 1840
= 440 + 1840
= $2280

Owen worked 3 times as many days as Ben.

3 sets of Owen's salary = $2280

1 set of Owen's salary
= 2280 ÷ 3
= $760

1 set of Ben's salary = $440

Difference between each set of Owen's and Ben's salaries
= 760 - 440
= $320

Number of days in 1 set
= 320 ÷ 20
= 16

Number of days that Owen worked
= 3 x 16
= 48
