Tom and Seth were paid a total of $3310 for a job they did. Seth was paid $1170 less than Tom.

1. How much was Seth paid for the job?
2. Tom and Seth were paid based on the number of days they worked. Tom worked 2 times as many days as Seth. Tom was paid $10 more than Seth per day. How many days did Tom work?

Amount that Seth was paid = 1 u
Amount that Tom was paid = 1 u + 1170

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1170
= 2 u + 1170

2 u + 1170 = 3310
2 u = 3310 - 1170
2 u = 2140

1 u = 2140 ÷ 2 = 1070

Amount that Seth was paid
= 1 u
= $1070

(b)
Amount that Tom was paid
= 1 u + 1170
= 1070 + 1170
= $2240

Tom worked 2 times as many days as Seth.

2 sets of Tom's salary = $2240

1 set of Tom's salary
= 2240 ÷ 2
= $1120

1 set of Seth's salary = $1070

Difference between each set of Tom's and Seth's salaries
= 1120 - 1070
= $50

Number of days in 1 set
= 50 ÷ 10
= 5

Number of days that Tom worked
= 2 x 5
= 10
