Paul and Ben were paid a total of $2400 for a job they did. Ben was paid $1530 less than Paul.

1. How much was Ben paid for the job?
2. Paul and Ben were paid based on the number of days they worked. Paul worked 3 times as many days as Ben. Paul was paid $20 more than Ben per day. How many days did Paul work?

Amount that Ben was paid = 1 u
Amount that Paul was paid = 1 u + 1530

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1530
= 2 u + 1530

2 u + 1530 = 2400
2 u = 2400 - 1530
2 u = 870

1 u = 870 ÷ 2 = 435

Amount that Ben was paid
= 1 u
= $435

(b)
Amount that Paul was paid
= 1 u + 1530
= 435 + 1530
= $1965

Paul worked 3 times as many days as Ben.

3 sets of Paul's salary = $1965

1 set of Paul's salary
= 1965 ÷ 3
= $655

1 set of Ben's salary = $435

Difference between each set of Paul's and Ben's salaries
= 655 - 435
= $220

Number of days in 1 set
= 220 ÷ 20
= 11

Number of days that Paul worked
= 3 x 11
= 33
