Carl and Tim were paid a total of $1630 for a job they did. Tim was paid $1130 less than Carl.

1. How much was Tim paid for the job?
2. Carl and Tim were paid based on the number of days they worked. Carl worked 3 times as many days as Tim. Carl was paid $15 more than Tim per day. How many days did Carl work?

Amount that Tim was paid = 1 u
Amount that Carl was paid = 1 u + 1130

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1130
= 2 u + 1130

2 u + 1130 = 1630
2 u = 1630 - 1130
2 u = 500

1 u = 500 ÷ 2 = 250

Amount that Tim was paid
= 1 u
= $250

(b)
Amount that Carl was paid
= 1 u + 1130
= 250 + 1130
= $1380

Carl worked 3 times as many days as Tim.

3 sets of Carl's salary = $1380

1 set of Carl's salary
= 1380 ÷ 3
= $460

1 set of Tim's salary = $250

Difference between each set of Carl's and Tim's salaries
= 460 - 250
= $210

Number of days in 1 set
= 210 ÷ 15
= 14

Number of days that Carl worked
= 3 x 14
= 42
