Justin and Howard were paid a total of $3060 for a job they did. Justin was paid $1340 more than Howard.

1. How much was Howard paid for the job?
2. Justin and Howard were paid based on the number of days they worked. Justin worked 2 times as many days as Howard. Howard was paid $20 less than Justin per day. How many days did Justin work?

Amount that Howard was paid = 1 u
Amount that Justin was paid = 1 u + 1340

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1340
= 2 u + 1340

2 u + 1340 = 3060
2 u = 3060 - 1340
2 u = 1720

1 u = 1720 ÷ 2 = 860

Amount that Howard was paid
= 1 u
= $860

(b)
Amount that Justin was paid
= 1 u + 1340
= 860 + 1340
= $2200

Justin worked 2 times as many days as Howard.

2 sets of Justin's salary = $2200

1 set of Justin's salary
= 2200 ÷ 2
= $1100

1 set of Howard's salary = $860

Difference between each set of Justin's and Howard's salaries
= 1100 - 860
= $240

Number of days in 1 set
= 240 ÷ 20
= 12

Number of days that Justin worked
= 2 x 12
= 24
