Eric and Howard were paid a total of $2040 for a job they did. Howard was paid $1460 less than Eric.

1. How much was Howard paid for the job?
2. Eric and Howard were paid based on the number of days they worked. Eric worked 5 times as many days as Howard. Eric was paid $12 more than Howard per day. How many days did Eric work?

Amount that Howard was paid = 1 u
Amount that Eric was paid = 1 u + 1460

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1460
= 2 u + 1460

2 u + 1460 = 2040
2 u = 2040 - 1460
2 u = 580

1 u = 580 ÷ 2 = 290

Amount that Howard was paid
= 1 u
= $290

(b)
Amount that Eric was paid
= 1 u + 1460
= 290 + 1460
= $1750

Eric worked 5 times as many days as Howard.

5 sets of Eric's salary = $1750

1 set of Eric's salary
= 1750 ÷ 5
= $350

1 set of Howard's salary = $290

Difference between each set of Eric's and Howard's salaries
= 350 - 290
= $60

Number of days in 1 set
= 60 ÷ 12
= 5

Number of days that Eric worked
= 5 x 5
= 25
