Liam and Ken were paid a total of $1540 for a job they did. Ken was paid $860 less than Liam.

1. How much was Ken paid for the job?
2. Liam and Ken were paid based on the number of days they worked. Liam worked 3 times as many days as Ken. Liam was paid $12 more than Ken per day. How many days did Liam work?

Amount that Ken was paid = 1 u
Amount that Liam was paid = 1 u + 860

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 860
= 2 u + 860

2 u + 860 = 1540
2 u = 1540 - 860
2 u = 680

1 u = 680 ÷ 2 = 340

Amount that Ken was paid
= 1 u
= $340

(b)
Amount that Liam was paid
= 1 u + 860
= 340 + 860
= $1200

Liam worked 3 times as many days as Ken.

3 sets of Liam's salary = $1200

1 set of Liam's salary
= 1200 ÷ 3
= $400

1 set of Ken's salary = $340

Difference between each set of Liam's and Ken's salaries
= 400 - 340
= $60

Number of days in 1 set
= 60 ÷ 12
= 5

Number of days that Liam worked
= 3 x 5
= 15
