Ryan and Dylan were paid a total of $1780 for a job they did. Ryan was paid $1280 more than Dylan.

1. How much was Dylan paid for the job?
2. Ryan and Dylan were paid based on the number of days they worked. Ryan worked 5 times as many days as Dylan. Dylan was paid $4 less than Ryan per day. How many days did Ryan work?

Amount that Dylan was paid = 1 u
Amount that Ryan was paid = 1 u + 1280

Total amount paid
= 1 u + 1 u + 1280
= 2 u + 1280

2 u + 1280 = 1780
2 u = 1780 - 1280
2 u = 500

1 u = 500 ÷ 2 = 250

Amount that Dylan was paid
= 1 u
= $250

(b)
Amount that Ryan was paid
= 1 u + 1280
= 250 + 1280
= $1530

Ryan worked 5 times as many days as Dylan.

5 sets of Ryan's salary = $1530

1 set of Ryan's salary
= 1530 ÷ 5
= $306

1 set of Dylan's salary = $250

Difference between each set of Ryan's and Dylan's salaries
= 306 - 250
= $56

Number of days in 1 set
= 56 ÷ 4
= 14

Number of days that Ryan worked
= 5 x 14
= 70
