A tank was completely filled with water. The ratio of the length of the tank to its breadth to its height is 7 : 3 : 12.
- Given that the length of the tank is 21 cm, find the volume of water in the tank.
- All the water in the tank was poured into 2 empty bottles J and K without spilling any water. As a result, Bottle J had 1700 cm3 more water than Bottle K. Find the volume of water in Bottle J. Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Length of the tank = 7 u
Breadth of the tank = 3 u
Height of the tank = 12 u
7 u = 21
1 u = 21 ÷ 7 = 3
Breadth of the tank
= 3 u
= 3 x 3
= 9 cm
Height of the tank
= 12 u
= 12 x 3
= 36 cm
Volume of water in the tank
= 21 x 9 x 36
= 6804 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water in Bottle J
= (6804 + 1700) ÷ 2
= 8504 ÷ 2
= 4252 cm
3 4252 mℓ = 4.252 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 6804 cm
3; (b) 4.252 ℓ
