A tank was completely filled with water. The ratio of the length of the tank to its breadth to its height is 8 : 3 : 15.
- Given that the length of the tank is 16 cm, find the volume of water in the tank.
- All the water in the tank was poured into 2 empty bottles W and X without spilling any water. As a result, Bottle W had 1700 cm3 more water than Bottle X. Find the volume of water in Bottle W. Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Length of the tank = 8 u
Breadth of the tank = 3 u
Height of the tank = 15 u
8 u = 16
1 u = 16 ÷ 8 = 2
Breadth of the tank
= 3 u
= 3 x 2
= 6 cm
Height of the tank
= 15 u
= 15 x 2
= 30 cm
Volume of water in the tank
= 16 x 6 x 30
= 2880 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water in Bottle W
= (2880 + 1700) ÷ 2
= 4580 ÷ 2
= 2290 cm
3 2290 mℓ = 2.29 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2880 cm
3; (b) 2.29 ℓ
