A tank was completely filled with water. The ratio of the length of the tank to its breadth to its height is 8 : 3 : 12.
- Given that the length of the tank is 24 cm, find the volume of water in the tank.
- All the water in the tank was poured into 2 empty bottles A and B without spilling any water. As a result, Bottle A had 1100 cm3 more water than Bottle B. Find the volume of water in Bottle A. Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Length of the tank = 8 u
Breadth of the tank = 3 u
Height of the tank = 12 u
8 u = 24
1 u = 24 ÷ 8 = 3
Breadth of the tank
= 3 u
= 3 x 3
= 9 cm
Height of the tank
= 12 u
= 12 x 3
= 36 cm
Volume of water in the tank
= 24 x 9 x 36
= 7776 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water in Bottle A
= (7776 + 1100) ÷ 2
= 8876 ÷ 2
= 4438 cm
3 4438 mℓ = 4.438 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 7776 cm
3; (b) 4.438 ℓ
