A tank was completely filled with water. The ratio of the length of the tank to its breadth to its height is 10 : 4 : 9.
- Given that the length of the tank is 20 cm, find the volume of water in the tank.
- All the water in the tank was poured into 2 empty bottles X and Y without spilling any water. As a result, Bottle X had 1500 cm3 more water than Bottle Y. Find the volume of water in Bottle X. Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Length of the tank = 10 u
Breadth of the tank = 4 u
Height of the tank = 9 u
10 u = 20
1 u = 20 ÷ 10 = 2
Breadth of the tank
= 4 u
= 4 x 2
= 8 cm
Height of the tank
= 9 u
= 9 x 2
= 18 cm
Volume of water in the tank
= 20 x 8 x 18
= 2880 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water in Bottle X
= (2880 + 1500) ÷ 2
= 4380 ÷ 2
= 2190 cm
3 2190 mℓ = 2.19 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 2880 cm
3; (b) 2.19 ℓ
