A tank was completely filled with water. The ratio of the length of the tank to its breadth to its height is 9 : 5 : 14.
- Given that the length of the tank is 18 cm, find the volume of water in the tank.
- All the water in the tank was poured into 2 empty bottles V and W without spilling any water. As a result, Bottle V had 1900 cm3 more water than Bottle W. Find the volume of water in Bottle V. Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Length of the tank = 9 u
Breadth of the tank = 5 u
Height of the tank = 14 u
9 u = 18
1 u = 18 ÷ 9 = 2
Breadth of the tank
= 5 u
= 5 x 2
= 10 cm
Height of the tank
= 14 u
= 14 x 2
= 28 cm
Volume of water in the tank
= 18 x 10 x 28
= 5040 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water in Bottle V
= (5040 + 1900) ÷ 2
= 6940 ÷ 2
= 3470 cm
3 3470 mℓ = 3.47 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 5040 cm
3; (b) 3.47 ℓ
