A tank was completely filled with water. The ratio of the length of the tank to its breadth to its height is 8 : 5 : 14.
- Given that the height of the tank is 28 cm, find the volume of water in the tank.
- All the water in the tank was poured into 2 empty bottles J and K without spilling any water. As a result, Bottle J had 1500 cm3 more water than Bottle K. Find the volume of water in Bottle J. Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Length of the tank = 8 u
Breadth of the tank = 5 u
Height of the tank = 14 u
14 u = 28
1 u = 28 ÷ 14 = 2
Length of the tank
= 8 u
= 8 x 2
= 16 cm
Breadth of the tank
= 5 u
= 5 x 2
= 10 cm
Volume of water in the tank
= 16 x 10 x 28
= 4480 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water in Bottle J
= (4480 + 1500) ÷ 2
= 5980 ÷ 2
= 2990 cm
3 2990 mℓ = 2.99 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 4480 cm
3; (b) 2.99 ℓ
