A tank was completely filled with water. The ratio of the length of the tank to its breadth to its height is 7 : 4 : 15.
- Given that the height of the tank is 30 cm, find the volume of water in the tank.
- All the water in the tank was poured into 2 empty bottles Y and Z without spilling any water. As a result, Bottle Y had 1400 cm3 more water than Bottle Z. Find the volume of water in Bottle Y. Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Length of the tank = 7 u
Breadth of the tank = 4 u
Height of the tank = 15 u
15 u = 30
1 u = 30 ÷ 15 = 2
Length of the tank
= 7 u
= 7 x 2
= 14 cm
Breadth of the tank
= 4 u
= 4 x 2
= 8 cm
Volume of water in the tank
= 14 x 8 x 30
= 3360 cm
3 (b)
Volume of water in Bottle Y
= (3360 + 1400) ÷ 2
= 4760 ÷ 2
= 2380 cm
3 2380 mℓ = 2.38 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 3360 cm
3; (b) 2.38 ℓ
