A container measuring 21 cm by 18 cm by 50 cm was
15 filled with water at first. Ben poured some water into the container. In the end, the height of the water level in the container was 15 cm as shown.
- How much water did Ben pour into container? Give your answer in mℓ.
- Ben then poured all the water in the container into several identical jugs. Given that each jug can hold at least 1.8 ℓ of water, what is the least number of jugs he would need?
(a)
Height of water in the container at first
=
15 x 50
= 10 cm
Increase in the height of water in the container
= 15 - 10
= 5 cm
Volume of water poured into the container
= 21 x 18 x 5
= 1890 mℓ
(b)
Volume of the water after some water was poured in
= 21 x 18 x 15
= 5670 cm
3
1.8 ℓ = 1800 mℓ
Number of jugs
= 5670 ÷ 1800
= 3 r 270
Least number of jugs that he would need
= 3 + 1
= 4
Answer(s): (a) 1890 mℓ; (b) 4
