Andy and Tommy each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Andy filled up 11 bottles and had 6.8 ℓ of water left. Tommy filled up 7 bottles and had 7.6 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Andy and Tommy had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 11 - 7
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 7.6 - 6.8
= 0.8 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 0.8 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 0.8 ÷ 4
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 7 bottles
= 7 x 0.2
= 1.4 ℓ
Volume of water that Tommy had at first
= 1.4 + 7.6
= 9 ℓ
Total volume of water that Andy and Tommy had at first
= 2 x 9
= 18 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 18 ℓ
