Tommy and Vaidev each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Tommy filled up 8 bottles and had 8.1 ℓ of water left. Vaidev filled up 6 bottles and had 9.7 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Tommy and Vaidev had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 8 - 6
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 9.7 - 8.1
= 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.6 ÷ 2
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 6 bottles
= 6 x 0.8
= 4.8 ℓ
Volume of water that Vaidev had at first
= 4.8 + 9.7
= 14.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Tommy and Vaidev had at first
= 2 x 14.5
= 29 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 29 ℓ
