Billy and Cody each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Billy filled up 13 bottles and had 5.9 ℓ of water left. Cody filled up 9 bottles and had 8.7 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Billy and Cody had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 13 - 9
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8.7 - 5.9
= 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.8 ÷ 4
= 0.7 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.7 ℓ = 0.7 x 1000 = 700 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 9 bottles
= 9 x 0.7
= 6.3 ℓ
Volume of water that Cody had at first
= 6.3 + 8.7
= 15 ℓ
Total volume of water that Billy and Cody had at first
= 2 x 15
= 30 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 700 mℓ (b) 30 ℓ
