Eric and Oliver each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Eric filled up 9 bottles and had 2.6 ℓ of water left. Oliver filled up 7 bottles and had 4.8 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Eric and Oliver had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 9 - 7
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 4.8 - 2.6
= 2.2 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 2.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.2 ÷ 2
= 1.1 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
1.1 ℓ = 1.1 x 1000 = 1100 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 7 bottles
= 7 x 1.1
= 7.7 ℓ
Volume of water that Oliver had at first
= 7.7 + 4.8
= 12.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Eric and Oliver had at first
= 2 x 12.5
= 25 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1100 mℓ (b) 25 ℓ
