Vaidev and Liam each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Vaidev filled up 12 bottles and had 8.4 ℓ of water left. Liam filled up 10 bottles and had 9 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Vaidev and Liam had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 12 - 10
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 9 - 8.4
= 0.6 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 0.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 0.6 ÷ 2
= 0.3 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.3 ℓ = 0.3 x 1000 = 300 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 10 bottles
= 10 x 0.3
= 3 ℓ
Volume of water that Liam had at first
= 3 + 9
= 12 ℓ
Total volume of water that Vaidev and Liam had at first
= 2 x 12
= 24 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 300 mℓ (b) 24 ℓ
