Liam and Ryan each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Liam filled up 12 bottles and had 2.4 ℓ of water left. Ryan filled up 10 bottles and had 4 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Liam and Ryan had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 12 - 10
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 4 - 2.4
= 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.6 ÷ 2
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 10 bottles
= 10 x 0.8
= 8 ℓ
Volume of water that Ryan had at first
= 8 + 4
= 12 ℓ
Total volume of water that Liam and Ryan had at first
= 2 x 12
= 24 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 24 ℓ
