Albert and Luke each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Albert filled up 14 bottles and had 2.8 ℓ of water left. Luke filled up 12 bottles and had 4.4 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Albert and Luke had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 14 - 12
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 4.4 - 2.8
= 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.6 ÷ 2
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 12 bottles
= 12 x 0.8
= 9.6 ℓ
Volume of water that Luke had at first
= 9.6 + 4.4
= 14 ℓ
Total volume of water that Albert and Luke had at first
= 2 x 14
= 28 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 28 ℓ
