Reggie and Fabian each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Reggie filled up 13 bottles and had 2.6 ℓ of water left. Fabian filled up 11 bottles and had 4.2 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Reggie and Fabian had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 13 - 11
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 4.2 - 2.6
= 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.6 ÷ 2
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 11 bottles
= 11 x 0.8
= 8.8 ℓ
Volume of water that Fabian had at first
= 8.8 + 4.2
= 13 ℓ
Total volume of water that Reggie and Fabian had at first
= 2 x 13
= 26 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 26 ℓ
