Mark and Seth each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Mark filled up 13 bottles and had 8.9 ℓ of water left. Seth filled up 7 bottles and had 10.1 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Mark and Seth had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 13 - 7
= 6
Difference between the volume of water left
= 10.1 - 8.9
= 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 6 bottles = 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.2 ÷ 6
= 0.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.2 ℓ = 0.2 x 1000 = 200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 7 bottles
= 7 x 0.2
= 1.4 ℓ
Volume of water that Seth had at first
= 1.4 + 10.1
= 11.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Mark and Seth had at first
= 2 x 11.5
= 23 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 200 mℓ (b) 23 ℓ
