Oliver and Nick each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Oliver filled up 9 bottles and had 4.1 ℓ of water left. Nick filled up 5 bottles and had 8.5 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Oliver and Nick had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 9 - 5
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8.5 - 4.1
= 4.4 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 4.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 4.4 ÷ 4
= 1.1 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
1.1 ℓ = 1.1 x 1000 = 1100 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 1.1
= 5.5 ℓ
Volume of water that Nick had at first
= 5.5 + 8.5
= 14 ℓ
Total volume of water that Oliver and Nick had at first
= 2 x 14
= 28 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1100 mℓ (b) 28 ℓ
