Julian and Vaidev each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Julian filled up 14 bottles and had 4.2 ℓ of water left. Vaidev filled up 10 bottles and had 7 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Julian and Vaidev had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 14 - 10
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 7 - 4.2
= 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.8 ÷ 4
= 0.7 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.7 ℓ = 0.7 x 1000 = 700 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 10 bottles
= 10 x 0.7
= 7 ℓ
Volume of water that Vaidev had at first
= 7 + 7
= 14 ℓ
Total volume of water that Julian and Vaidev had at first
= 2 x 14
= 28 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 700 mℓ (b) 28 ℓ
