Carl and Oliver each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Carl filled up 13 bottles and had 3.1 ℓ of water left. Oliver filled up 9 bottles and had 6.3 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Carl and Oliver had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 13 - 9
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 6.3 - 3.1
= 3.2 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 3.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 3.2 ÷ 4
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 9 bottles
= 9 x 0.8
= 7.2 ℓ
Volume of water that Oliver had at first
= 7.2 + 6.3
= 13.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Carl and Oliver had at first
= 2 x 13.5
= 27 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 27 ℓ
