Billy and Elijah each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Billy filled up 13 bottles and had 4.9 ℓ of water left. Elijah filled up 7 bottles and had 9.1 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Billy and Elijah had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 13 - 7
= 6
Difference between the volume of water left
= 9.1 - 4.9
= 4.2 ℓ
Volume of 6 bottles = 4.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 4.2 ÷ 6
= 0.7 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.7 ℓ = 0.7 x 1000 = 700 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 7 bottles
= 7 x 0.7
= 4.9 ℓ
Volume of water that Elijah had at first
= 4.9 + 9.1
= 14 ℓ
Total volume of water that Billy and Elijah had at first
= 2 x 14
= 28 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 700 mℓ (b) 28 ℓ
