Tom and Oliver each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Tom filled up 11 bottles and had 3.7 ℓ of water left. Oliver filled up 5 bottles and had 8.5 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Tom and Oliver had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 11 - 5
= 6
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8.5 - 3.7
= 4.8 ℓ
Volume of 6 bottles = 4.8 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 4.8 ÷ 6
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.8
= 4 ℓ
Volume of water that Oliver had at first
= 4 + 8.5
= 12.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Tom and Oliver had at first
= 2 x 12.5
= 25 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 25 ℓ
