Henry and Daniel each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Henry filled up 13 bottles and had 10.1 ℓ of water left. Daniel filled up 5 bottles and had 12.5 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Henry and Daniel had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 13 - 5
= 8
Difference between the volume of water left
= 12.5 - 10.1
= 2.4 ℓ
Volume of 8 bottles = 2.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.4 ÷ 8
= 0.3 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.3 ℓ = 0.3 x 1000 = 300 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.3
= 1.5 ℓ
Volume of water that Daniel had at first
= 1.5 + 12.5
= 14 ℓ
Total volume of water that Henry and Daniel had at first
= 2 x 14
= 28 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 300 mℓ (b) 28 ℓ
