Will and Ryan each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Will filled up 18 bottles and had 3.6 ℓ of water left. Ryan filled up 10 bottles and had 6 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Will and Ryan had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 18 - 10
= 8
Difference between the volume of water left
= 6 - 3.6
= 2.4 ℓ
Volume of 8 bottles = 2.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.4 ÷ 8
= 0.3 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.3 ℓ = 0.3 x 1000 = 300 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 10 bottles
= 10 x 0.3
= 3 ℓ
Volume of water that Ryan had at first
= 3 + 6
= 9 ℓ
Total volume of water that Will and Ryan had at first
= 2 x 9
= 18 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 300 mℓ (b) 18 ℓ
