Archie and Pierre each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Archie filled up 9 bottles and had 6.8 ℓ of water left. Pierre filled up 5 bottles and had 8 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Archie and Pierre had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 9 - 5
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8 - 6.8
= 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 1.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.2 ÷ 4
= 0.3 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.3 ℓ = 0.3 x 1000 = 300 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.3
= 1.5 ℓ
Volume of water that Pierre had at first
= 1.5 + 8
= 9.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Archie and Pierre had at first
= 2 x 9.5
= 19 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 300 mℓ (b) 19 ℓ
