Carl and Archie each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Carl filled up 16 bottles and had 3.8 ℓ of water left. Archie filled up 12 bottles and had 6.6 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Carl and Archie had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 16 - 12
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 6.6 - 3.8
= 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.8 ÷ 4
= 0.7 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.7 ℓ = 0.7 x 1000 = 700 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 12 bottles
= 12 x 0.7
= 8.4 ℓ
Volume of water that Archie had at first
= 8.4 + 6.6
= 15 ℓ
Total volume of water that Carl and Archie had at first
= 2 x 15
= 30 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 700 mℓ (b) 30 ℓ
