Oscar and Julian each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Oscar filled up 9 bottles and had 7.2 ℓ of water left. Julian filled up 7 bottles and had 8.6 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Oscar and Julian had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 9 - 7
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8.6 - 7.2
= 1.4 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 1.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 1.4 ÷ 2
= 0.7 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.7 ℓ = 0.7 x 1000 = 700 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 7 bottles
= 7 x 0.7
= 4.9 ℓ
Volume of water that Julian had at first
= 4.9 + 8.6
= 13.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Oscar and Julian had at first
= 2 x 13.5
= 27 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 700 mℓ (b) 27 ℓ
