John and Ryan each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. John filled up 11 bottles and had 7.7 ℓ of water left. Ryan filled up 9 bottles and had 8.3 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water John and Ryan had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 11 - 9
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 8.3 - 7.7
= 0.6 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 0.6 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 0.6 ÷ 2
= 0.3 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.3 ℓ = 0.3 x 1000 = 300 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 9 bottles
= 9 x 0.3
= 2.7 ℓ
Volume of water that Ryan had at first
= 2.7 + 8.3
= 11 ℓ
Total volume of water that John and Ryan had at first
= 2 x 11
= 22 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 300 mℓ (b) 22 ℓ
