Julian and Lee each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Julian filled up 9 bottles and had 3.8 ℓ of water left. Lee filled up 5 bottles and had 7 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Julian and Lee had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 9 - 5
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 7 - 3.8
= 3.2 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 3.2 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 3.2 ÷ 4
= 0.8 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.8 ℓ = 0.8 x 1000 = 800 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.8
= 4 ℓ
Volume of water that Lee had at first
= 4 + 7
= 11 ℓ
Total volume of water that Julian and Lee had at first
= 2 x 11
= 22 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 800 mℓ (b) 22 ℓ
