Ken and Oliver each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Ken filled up 9 bottles and had 8.2 ℓ of water left. Oliver filled up 5 bottles and had 11 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Ken and Oliver had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 9 - 5
= 4
Difference between the volume of water left
= 11 - 8.2
= 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 4 bottles = 2.8 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.8 ÷ 4
= 0.7 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
0.7 ℓ = 0.7 x 1000 = 700 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 0.7
= 3.5 ℓ
Volume of water that Oliver had at first
= 3.5 + 11
= 14.5 ℓ
Total volume of water that Ken and Oliver had at first
= 2 x 14.5
= 29 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 700 mℓ (b) 29 ℓ
