Neave and Fabian each had the same volume of water. The water was used to pour into identical bottles. Neave filled up 7 bottles and had 4.6 ℓ of water left. Fabian filled up 5 bottles and had 7 ℓ of water left.
- What was the capacity of each bottle? Give your answer in millilitres.
- What was the total volume of water Neave and Fabian had at first? Give your answer in litres.
(a)
Difference between the number of bottles
= 7 - 5
= 2
Difference between the volume of water left
= 7 - 4.6
= 2.4 ℓ
Volume of 2 bottles = 2.4 ℓ
Volume of 1 bottle
= 2.4 ÷ 2
= 1.2 ℓ
1 ℓ = 1000 mℓ
1.2 ℓ = 1.2 x 1000 = 1200 mℓ
(b)
Volume of 5 bottles
= 5 x 1.2
= 6 ℓ
Volume of water that Fabian had at first
= 6 + 7
= 13 ℓ
Total volume of water that Neave and Fabian had at first
= 2 x 13
= 26 ℓ
Answer(s): (a) 1200 mℓ (b) 26 ℓ
